Community Literacy Trees
in the Misfit Sock Forest.

Harnessing the imagination and rooted in STEAM thinking, Community Literacy Trees grow in an imaginary Misfit Sock Forest, which embraces all things "misfit" and celebrates diversity, acceptance and empowerment.  The handmade trees transform the wall of a classroom, library, or community building and offer an unique opportunity for creative exploration, self-discovery and community building.

The trees take shape using recycled or "misfit" materials: a cardboard box, a plastic bottle, a old book, a misfit sock. Through STEAM projects, students can explore science, engineering and math concepts in the Misfit Sock Forest, while using art and journaling as a catalyst for conversation and action on the importance of seeing possibility in anything marginalized, celebrating differences and feeling empowered.

The Community Literacy Trees can also serve as a fundrasier for schools and libraries town-wide.

Misfit University

A pile of misfit socks on the laundry room floor was all the inspiration one New England family needed to open the doors of Misfit University, the only online university of its kind to take a unique stand against bullying and encourage young people to celebrate what makes them different.

Founded in 2012, this resource creatively introduces a hands-on educational curriculum that includes an anti-bullying initiative, service-learning projects, cause-related events and spirited fun with the goal of delivering unmatched results in the practice of team-building, positive self-esteem, creativity, and respect. Misfit University is free and new curriculum projects are added monthly. Click MISFIT STRONG image for more informaton.

Misfit University was founded on the principle that we are all magnificent MISFITS and the very talents and experiences that can sometimes divide us, should define us and be nurtured and shared,” said Misfit University co-founder Karen Kiefer. The University focuses its curriculum in four areas: Hope, Inspiration, Love and Gratitude and uses creative concepts to communicate important messages to young people. “It is very common for young people to hide their talents or handicaps for fear of not being accepted,” added Kiefer.

The Misfit Sock

The Misfit Sock is the profoundly magical story of a sock that has lost its perfect match during the laundry cycle and in a JINGLE is labeled a "misfit." Tossed into a misfit pile and forgotten, the sock loses its zest for life, believing that it will never be loved or happy again.

Find out what happens when the misfit sock meets the magnificent spirit of Christmas on the laundry room floor and how the misfit sock inspires other misfit socks to find their purpose by finding their way into the hearts of every girl and boy, because in a hug only a child realizes that a misfit sock is the perfect match for Santa.

 The Misfit Sock Traditon

A "misfit sock" is transformed into a magical misfit sock the moment it is loved by a child or a child at heart. The storybook comes with a misfit sock. Hang your misfit sock some place special and stuff it daily with handwritten Misfit WISH Cards leading up to Christmas Eve.  Then, stuff your misfit sock with gratitude goodies for Santa his elves and reindeer.  When Santa arrives he enjoys the goodies, reads all of the child's wishes for the season and knows enough to leave the sock for next Christmas... and the tradition begins.

Founder’s Notes

"We are doing something different with STEAM education, using our misfit sock movement as a muse and adding a youth empowerment and anti-bullying piece that can become a catalyst for powerful conversations that can change actions, behaviors and minds. Misfit STEAM ahead."
