  SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

Hundreds of experiments live in the Misfit Sock Forest.

Now that your Community Literacy Tree is beginning to sprout, it's time to grab your MISFIT STRONG

SCIENCE journal and begin some  science lessons.

The first lesson is about growing growing grass and other plants using a sock. That's right, a sock plant, and because of you, lots of plants live in the Misfit Sock Forest.  This first experiment is a good introduction to the worlkd of hypothesis and predicitons and a great way to make use of misfit socks.

SOCK PLANTS

What You Need:

  • Pair of old cotton socks (preferably white)

  • Magnifying glass

  • MISFIT STRONG journal and pencil

  • Crayons or markers

  • Small flower pot

  • Potting soil

  • Water for watering

What You Do:

  • Between dandelions, clover, plants, flowers, grass, and weeds, most schoolyards are full of seeds. They're just not always apparent to the naked eye. Allow your students to put on a pair of socks and walk around the schoolyard to pick up debris. Encourage them to walk through the grass, between plants, and through the flowerbeds (but not on the flowers!) Hopefully, your studnet's socks will “pick up” lots of neat items.

  • When they get tired of walking around, help them carefully remove their socks. Use your magnifying glass to take a look at what the socks have collected. Try to guess which seeds you see and ask them to predict what might grow. Have them write down their answers in the journal. Then place the socks in a small flowerpot or mason jar, add some potting soil, and water lightly.

  • Place the pots/jars underneath the Community Literacy Tree.

  • Over the next days and weeks, use the journals to record daily observations.
